This is my pattern for a basic fitted knitted beanie! This is the pattern I use when doing color work or other designs. I like to keep it simple & will be making lots of character hats from this pattern! This is a great project for a beginner!
Yarn: medium worsted weight; approx. 100 yds
[Red Heart Super Saver in medium purple]
Needles: Size US 8 (5.0mm) circular 16″
Size US 10 (6.0 mm) circular 16″ (optional)
Materials: stitch marker
Scissors & tapestry needle
Gauge: 14 sts & 20 rows = 4 inches
Circumference- 20 inches
CO 66 st [US 8/5.0 mm circular 16″]
Begin 1×1 rib
6-8 rounds: *K1, P1*
Option to switch to larger needles [US 10/6.0 mm circular 16″]
K across all rows.
Knit desired length – When first starting out I would put my hat on while they were still on my needles. If I liked the length I would begin to close (hat closure will not add any length to your hat)
[my hat just covers my ears & measures approximately 6 inches – 1 in of ribbed brim and 5 ins of knit]
Begin hat closure:
Round 1: *K4, sl1, k2tog, psso, K4* (54 st)
All even rounds: K
Round 3: *K3, sl1, k2tog, psso, K3* (42 st)
Round 5: *K2, sl1, k2tog, psso, K2* (30 st)
*OPTIONAL Round 7: *K1, sl1, k2tog, psso, K1* (18 st)
Cut off long-tail & thread tapestry needle. Enter each st knitwise & slide off needle.
Pull yarn through middle & sew in.
Pattern Notes: This pattern is easily adjustable. The brim & knitted portions can be knit the length you need. You can also adjust this pattern based on the materials you have. Adjust the stitches in multiples of 6. This hat fits standard adult size.
This pattern will be a “base” for my knitted beanie designs. Beanies are one of my favorite things to create & I have lots of patterns to come…
